‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Finale Renews Rumors of Rift Between Stars

Rumors of a rift between two “Game of Thrones” stars won’t go away, and the Season 7 finale didn’t help.

In Season 7, Episode 7, “The Dragon and the Wolf,” it looked like two characters who have long been rumored to be on the outs would appear in the same scene. (Spoiler ahead.) Bronn (Jerome Flynn) was headed to the Dragonpit alongside Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), where Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and the rest of her entourage were due to gather. However, at the last minute, Bronn invited Podrick (Daniel Portman) to grab a drink with him, ducking out of the scene and fueling speculation that problems between Flynn and Headey persist, as the New York Post points out.

Rumors about possible tension between the two, who were once romantically linked, began in 2014, when a member of the “Game of Thrones” crew told the U.K.’s Telegraph that the two were not “on speaking terms” and were to “be kept apart at all costs.” The Season 7 finale did nothing to discourage such rumblings; if anything, it reignited them.

However, while it is possible that Bronn’s drink with Podrick was meant to separate Flynn and Headey, there is another alternative to consider. The Dragonpit scene was very crowded. Not only did it give us the anticipated meeting of Cersei and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), there were also multiple tense family reunions. As it was, showrunner D. B. Weiss admitted in the finale’s “Inside the Episode” video that it was very difficult to shoot.

“We were in that Dragonpit for many, many days,” he said. “It’s a deceptively difficult thing to shoot, because there are so many different moments between different people.”

It seems likely that Weiss and his co-showrunner, David Benioff, spared themselves additional logistical headaches by removing two characters from the scene. Perhaps Headey and Flynn’s rumored feud was part of that decision, but perhaps not. We’ll see if they shoot any scenes together in Season 8.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” is expected to premiere in 2018 or possibly as late as 2019.
